ABOUT

Born in 1983 and of Chinese and Filipino descent, Jewelle spent her formative years split between the UK, Hong Kong and the Philippines. Jewelle spent the early part of her career in London, as a designer after attending The University of the Arts for Fashion, and receiving a Masters from The City and Guilds of London Art School for Fine Art. Her design career flourished during stints at both Hussein Chalayan and Puma International. But it was Yeung’s devotion to painting that stole her away from the fashion world to set up a studio in the Philippines.

Jewelle examines natural phenomena and larger-than-life concepts, then from her own experiences and perceptions of them, the Cebu-based artist takes the perspective of both the journalist and the respondent, chronicling and purging throughout her process.

Yeung juxtaposes the metaphysical with the traditional, combining a palette of deep tones, blazing hues, and bold highlights to reflect a great coalition of theology, ideology, and human emotion.

Through oil paint, oil pastels, and the affective capacity of color, stroke, and shape, Jewelle Yeung moves to immerse the viewer into the beauty and chaos of nature, the mysteries of history and phenomena, and the inherent and incessant need to comprehend all these. Yeung’s highly stimulating expressions of vitality exist to inspire and invite the observer to inquire the relationship between people, planet, and the divine.
